Stencils are widely available from craft to large DIY stores and come in many creative designs. whilst we have stencilled onto a napkin, the technique described applies equally onto walls - the steps outlined below explain how to stencil a wall. Before starting familiarize yourself with:

• How to hold the brush (at right-angles to the wall)

• How to apply the paint (tapping motion so the bristles contact the wall through the stencil)

• How much paint to load on the brush (do not overload, otherwise paint will seep under the stencil and create heavy blobs)

RECIPE: Acrylic stencil paint
INGREDIENTS: Stencil paint -Stencil brush – stencil mount – acrylic emulsion paint for base coat – ladder – dish
LEVEL OF EXPERTISE: 1 star
1 star = extremely simple, 5 stars = not so straightforward
TIME REQUIRED: For a 2.5 x 3m wall, approximately 2 hours.
SUITABLE AREAS: All areas – fabric, walls or furniture. This technique is easy and quick.

TECHNIQUE

Step 1: Paint the basecoat using acrylic emulsion in a colour of your choice, and leave to dry overnight.

Step 2: Decide where you want the pattern to appear. Will it be a single motif or chained design around the border of a room or wall.

Step 3: Spray stencil mount on the back of the stencil – this will secure the stencil on to the wall before the paint is applied.

Step 4: Decant a small quantity of stencil paint into a saucer.

Step 5: Position the stencil where desired on the wall.

Step 6: Using a soft dabbing action, stipple the entire area of the stencil. Remove immediately and leave to dry.

Step 7: Repeat the process until the desired effect is achieved.

TIP: To create your own stencil, trace around the design with a pen. Then cut out the design with a scalpel onto a cutting board but be careful to not damage the surface underneath.
