TECHNIQUE
Step 1: Paint the basecoat using acrylic emulsion paint and leave to dry overnight.
Step 2: Before starting, mask off areas you don’t want to paint, as this technique requires quick action. Don’t forget to cover the floor!
Step 3: Mix the glaze: Use one-third [colour] acrylic emulsion from tester pot with two-thirds classic colour glaze, stirring well. If needed, add a few tablespoons of water to loosen the glaze to the consistency of single cream.
Step 4: Starting from the bottom left hand corner work your way up to the ceiling, then across and then down to the skirting until the wall is finished, always keeping the edge of the glaze wet.
Step 5: Working in 1 square metre sections, apply an even layer of glaze to the wall with a paintbrush, softening any harsh brushstrokes with a softening brush. Working with a partner is ideal – one to paint on the glaze and the other to rag it off.
Step 6: Scrunch up a piece of rag (an old tea towel is ideal) into a flat sausage shape and roll it through the paint. Tthis will pick up the paint and re-distribute it as it rolls over the surface, whilst at the same time creating a soft decorative finish.
TIP: Ragging can end up becoming a bit messy, as the paint is soaked up by the rag and will make your hands dirty, so you may be well advised to wear protective gloves.
